Why You Should Do Personal Background Checks
Before you consider upgrading your personal relationship make sure you carry
out background checks on the person. Now, it may seem callous to do this - after
all, did our parents do background checks on each other? - but the reality of
it is, times have changed and more and more of us are trying to hide something
from our past.
Criminal history
Without doing a simple check of the person' criminal history, you won't know
for sure whether or not they have a criminal past. What's more, unlike in our
parents' day, today there is no one to vouch for the past of that new person
in your life. With the help of an Internet connection you can do an instantaneously
background search of their criminal history and make sure they're not a rapist,
mugger, thief, etc.
Financial history
OK, consider this: you meet someone through a dating agency who you like. You
decide to get serious in the relationship and get married. You haven't done
any background checking on their financial past. Three months after you are
married someone knocks on your door and tells you the house you live in is being
seized as assets subject to bankruptcy proceedings. Bet you wish you had done
that financial background search now - don't you! The fact is, in certain circumstances
you can be held liable for the previous actions of your new loved one: so make
sure they have a clean financial history before you get serious with them. Otherwise,
at least know the facts before your new loved one's past catches up with you.
Employment history
Doing an employment background check is important for two reasons:
Firstly, if your new found love has changed jobs often, what does that really
say about them? Is it a case of their simply being unsettled - and, if so, are
you going to have to move soon? Or, are they not really that good at their job
with limited prospects of advancing in their career? Either way, you'll not
know without having done a background screening on their employment history.
Second, many of us don't really tell the truth when people ask us what we do!
If someone says they're a manager, they could actually be a supervisor. Or,
if someone says they used to be in law enforcement - does that mean they were
a prisoner! Do a formal screening of their employment history and you'll know.
As you can hopefully see, while we are all delighted that you have found someone
special in your life, you know it makes sense to do some background checks before
you take the relationship to the next level!
