Employment Background Checks
If you have wondered why employers need to do background checks, just consider
paying fees for a college without knowing the course they offer. Employment
background check is a precaution. It is an activity that has become an intergral
part of every sound management procedures. When you do not know enough about
people, you dont entrust them with sensitive positions.
At the basic level, the employer would want to be sure that the candidate is
presenting the truth to him i terms of credentials. The need to verify credentials
is further reinforced by the research that over 40% credentials presented at
employment is false. The employer is performing the background check to ensure
that all stated credentials are rue and accurate.
Typically an employent background check will look into previous work history,
past roles in companies, educational qualifications and criminal records. Although
employees are guided by the type of job the candidate is goigto perform, they
do not lose sight of any useful negative infomation that will come up during
the search. For example i the course of verifying the academic certificates
of a candidate it was discovered that the person falsified a check during his
studentship, the employer cannot ignore this fact. Although the information
has been stumbled upon, it serves the company some good as it gives the emplyer
some insight into the criminal inclinations of the candiate. Though the company
may go ahead to consider the candidate for the job, this person may never be
appointed an accountant.
In conducting employment background checks, employers should be guded by strong
ethics. What constututes confidential information and what constitutes public
information? Though this is hard to define, there are some clear restrictions.
You cannot obtain a candidate's school records without his consent.Though this
eexample looks stright forward, there are someissues that are difficult to figure
out. If a person's medical records indicate a disability and the company unrelatedly
rejects the person's candidature, will it be accused of disciminating against
the physically challenged? Such is the delimma of employers pursuit of the hidden
lives of candidates.
