The Wonders Of An Online Background Check
Recently I wanted to learn a little bit more about myself, so I put my name
in a search engine and started an online background check of my past. Before
long, navigating through several websites, I knew: where and when I was born,
where I had gone to school (which was so long ago it surprised me!) and some,
but not all, of my previous employment history. I also discovered that I had
no criminal background to speak of (relieving to know) and that my credit rating
was ok-ish. All-in-all, quite satisfying. I then decided that online background
searching was not only fun, but it could also be very rewarding!
With more time on my hands, I thought it might be fun to do some background
checks online of my friends. So, I chose four good friends and set out the following
criteria for my online search:
- their date and place of birth;
- who their parents were; and
- whether or not they had any children.
(basically because I knew most of the answers already!)
After only a few days I collated all the information I needed and more! Indeed,
I now knew some intimate things about my friends that I had never know before
(for example, that one of them had played semi-professional sport after graduating
and that another had a not too happy credit rating - last time I lend them $10!).
Using the information I had gleaned from my online background checking I then
made up family trees for my four good friends and on the next occasion I met
with each of them I presented them with my gift and told them a few things about
them they had not told me previously (but I didn't include the credit history).
Each of them was delighted, but none of them could believe how I had managed
to obtain all of this information free online.
So, what does this story tells us? Actually, two things. First, in today's
world it is hard, if not impossible, to hide your past and present. Second,
there's a lot of information out there about you, so you should check this every
once in a while and make sure that the information is correct by doing a simple
free online background check on yourself!
